Large-scale atmospheric controls of extreme weather events: dynamical processes and predictability
5-6th October 2017, Stockholm, Sweden

Presentation files are available by clicking on the speaker's name below. Video-recordings are available here.
Extreme, high-impact weather events have serious social and economic consequences, and have garnered widespread scientific and media attention. Understanding their drivers and improving their prediction is therefore a topic of crucial societal and economic value, where the interests of academia, policy makers and private stakeholders converge.
The workshop will focus on large-scale atmospheric controls of extreme weather, and will address key questions related to the predictability of extremes and responses to climate change. Emerging mathematical and statistical techniques which may advance the field will also be discussed. The main objectives are to review recent research ideas on the topic, explore links with end-users of research on weather extremes and develop strategies to grow activity in this important area.
The workshop will feature an international panel of invited speakers and will emphasises open discussions. Attendance to the presentations is open to all, but due to space limitations registration is required.
Invited Speakers: David Battisti, Freddy Bouchet, Davide Faranda, Richard Grotjahn, Nili Harnik, Stephen Jewson*, Lynn McMurdie, Joaquim Pinto, Gwendal Rivière, Tim Woollings, Pascal Yiou.
*The speaker did not wish for his presentation to be publicly available.

Convenors: Gabriele Messori and Rodrigo Caballero, Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University.
Sponsors: International Meteorological Institute, Bolin Centre for Climate Research, Department of Meteorology of Stockholm University.
Programme: The meeting will start on Thursday 5th October 2017 at 9:00am and finish on Friday 6th October 2017 at 16:30pm. You can download the programme here.
Workshop location and travel details: The workshop will be held in Stockholm University's Frescati Campus (see Map). Room directions are provided in the programme above. For the best route to/from Frescati Campus you may use the journey planner of SL, the provider of public transport in Stockholm County.

Travel to Stockholm: Stockholm's main international airport, Arlanda, is situated roughly 40 km North of the city. Regular express and regional trains and coaches link the airport to the city centre. Public transportation tickets may be bought from the Information Point in the arrivals area of Terminal 5.
For those travelling directly from the airport to the department or vice-versa there are two options: i) take the regional train (pendeltåg) from the airport towards Centralen, alight at Ulriksdal station and take bus 540 towards Universitetet, where it terminates (approx. 55min); ii) take the express train (Arlanda Express) to the central station, and from there underground line 14 towards Mörby Centrum (approx. 45min).

Registration: If you would like to attend part or all of the presentations please register by sending an email to Gabriele Messori (gabriele.messori (at) misu.su.se). Please note that space is limited.
